Consultations
The School Strike Notification proposal explores options for providing a longer notification period for school strikes, while preserving teachers’ and principals’ right to strike.
Currently, unions are required under the Act to provide 3 calendar days’ notice of a strike to school boards and the Secretary for Education.
The Government is exploring options to extend the notice period that unions must give for a school strike from 3 calendar days to either:
- option 1: no less than 3 working days
- option 2: no less than 7 calendar days, or
- option 3: retain the status quo.
We will be undertaking public consultation on the School Strike Notification proposal until 6 September 2024.
The Ministry is also consulting on options for unique identifiers for use in administering the Performance-Based Research Fund (PBRF) and similar research initiatives. The PBRF is designed to increase the quality of research in Aotearoa New Zealand by encouraging and rewarding excellent research.
To provide a unique, trusted identifier that enables the collection and storage of personal information in accordance with relevant legislation, we propose 2 options:
- Option 1: Create a new unique identifier for use with the PBRF Quality Evaluation and similar research initiatives.
- Option 2: Amend Schedule 24 of the Act to enabling the Tertiary Education Organisations to use the National Student Number (NSN) for the PBRF Quality Evaluation or similar research initiatives, including retrospective validation.
Both options are intended to ensure that the use of a unique identifier for the purpose of the PBRF Quality Evaluation and similar research initiatives, is compliant with the Act and the Privacy Act 2020.
Consultation on the unique identifier proposal closes on 29 August at 5pm.
